Zippy’s Friends Program expands into urban schools

Thanks to a generous grant from the George A. Ohl Jr. Trust  the YCS Institute will be able to train 14 early childhood educators from Paterson and Newark/Essex school districts to teach the Zippy’s Friends program to children in kindergarten and first grade. Zippy promotes positive healthy mental health development and social interactions among young children.

NCJW responds to YCS’ need for camp clothes

The Young Women’s Group of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) - Essex Section collected about 150 new summer outfits for YCS campers and teens at their spring Mitzvah night. “We are very grateful for the Young Women’s Group’s caring commitment to YCS...We can always count on their support...They ask us what we need and then organize ways to fulfill our requests,” says Robin Peck, YCS Foundation Co-Executive Director.
Children get a little “TLC” from donors – To kick off the 10th anniversary of the opening of the first YCS Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC), long time supporters from St. Luke’s Church in Montclair were invited back to celebrate by reading to the preschoolers. Tom Cochran, Rosanne Morey and Janet Chisolm were treated to a performance by all the children before they headed off into classrooms to read to small groups. Over the years, supporters from St. Luke’s Church have contributed critical funding to keep the program afloat and additional resources for in-need families whose children attend the TLC.

HAPI volunteers turn a rainy day into an afternoon of fun and games

Hoop-A-Paluza (HAPI) volunteers were hoping to put the finishing touches on a newly donated basketball court and jungle gym at YCS Holley by painting a mural in the courtyard. When the weather didn’t cooperate, more than a dozen volunteers and their family members played all sorts of games and then provided dinner for all the children. It was an unexpected treat that the children immensely enjoyed, according to Alex Seidler, site administrator.
Wolff Samson hosts bowlathon for YCS

The West Orange law firm of Wolff and Samson sponsored a night of bowling at Eagle Rock Lanes on behalf of YCS. More than 100 lawyers, their families and friends participated. With the help of ESPN sportscaster Jeremy Schaap and former Giants quarterback Scott Brunner, the firm raised necessary funds for YCS summer camp.
On April 17th in recognition of Alcohol and Drug Awareness Day, YCS Department of Addiction Services (DAS) talks to Renaissance Middle School students about the risks involved in experimenting with tobacco, alcohol and other addictive substances. Marc Wurgaft, (standing center) YCS-DAS director, fielded questions from the students with the help of teens (sitting in the rear) involved in the drug intervention program. Based in East Orange, YCS-DAS provides comprehensive clinical services for at-risk children (5-21) and their families.

URGENT REQUEST

We need your help to send Governor Corzine and members of the Legislature emails requesting an annualized cost-of-providing-care increase of 3.6% to be included in the FY 2009 budget for YCS and other community providers. This modest increase will help YCS meet the escalating costs of food, gas and home energy necessary to care for hundreds of children in YCS shelters, therapeutic residences, IRTS units, and aging-in facilities.

This e mail appeal has been organized by the Cost of Providing Care Coalition.
Their goal is to flood the email in-boxes of Governor Corzine and members of the Legislature from now until June 2.   To have your voice heard, please click here.
